My Credit Guide exists for people rebuilding — after a divorce, a layoff, a bankruptcy, or just years of decisions that seemed fine at the time. Most credit advice online is written for people who already have a 750 score. Ours starts where you actually are.
About Steven Reynolds
Steven Reynolds writes about credit, personal finance, and the everyday money decisions that can have a lasting impact on your life.
His interest in finance didn’t begin in a classroom or on Wall Street. It started with the same kinds of questions many people face: Why does a credit score seem so complicated? How do you recover from financial mistakes? When should you pay off debt, save, invest, or simply keep more cash in the bank?
Like many people, Steven learned some of his most valuable financial lessons through experience. He discovered that seemingly small decisions, like using credit without fully understanding the terms, carrying balances longer than expected, or putting off financial planning, can become expensive lessons over time. He also learned that improving your financial situation rarely requires a complicated strategy. More often, it comes down to understanding how the system works and making better decisions consistently.
That experience led Steven to spend years learning more about credit, borrowing, saving, budgeting, and building long-term financial stability. Along the way, he became especially interested in taking financial topics that are often filled with confusing terminology and explaining them in a way ordinary people can actually use.
Today, Steven writes to help readers become more confident with their money. His goal isn’t to promise overnight wealth or perfect finances. It’s to provide practical information that helps people understand their options, avoid costly mistakes, improve their credit, and make smarter decisions with the money they have.
Steven believes financial progress doesn’t happen all at once. It happens one informed decision at a time.
What we cover
We review and compare the financial products that are actually available to people with damaged or thin credit — secured and subprime credit cards, personal loans below prime, and credit repair options — plus free calculators and state-by-state legal guides on debt. We tell you what a product costs, who it’s genuinely for, and when the honest answer is “skip it and wait six months.”
What makes us different
- We name the catch. Every product page lists fees and drawbacks before benefits. If “guaranteed approval” is a myth, we say so on a page titled exactly that.
- Primary sources only. Product terms come from issuer documents; state law figures come from the state’s own statutes. Every data page shows when it was last verified.
- We show the math. Our calculators are free, run in your browser, and don’t ask for your email.
How this site is funded
Some product links are affiliate links — if you apply through them, we may earn a commission at no cost to you. It never changes a rating, and plenty of products we recommend pay us nothing. The full policy is on How We Make Money and our Editorial Methodology explains how products get rated.
