The Department of Veterans Affairs reported $10.37 billion in delinquent debt owed to it on June 30, 2026, up from $4.63 billion a year earlier. Most of the increase was in VA direct loans, where delinquent debt went from $0.38 billion to $5.74 billion. The Social Security Administration reported $7.78 billion, up from $7.17 billion.
The report does not say why VA direct-loan delinquencies rose, and we have not found a VA explanation we can confirm. The table below covers agencies other than the Department of Education, whose student loans are on a separate page.

What this counts
The Treasury Report on Receivables is filed by each agency every quarter. Delinquent debt is money owed to the agency that is past due, summed across the agency’s aging buckets. It includes debts owed by businesses and others as well as individuals, and administrative receivables such as benefit overpayments. A delinquent federal debt can be referred to Treasury for collection, including offset of tax refunds and some federal payments.
