Editorial Policy

MyCreditGuide.org is written and maintained by Thomas Sever. Everything on this site is based on personal experience, independent research, or both. Here’s how I approach content and why you can trust what you read here.

Who Writes This Content

I write this site myself. I’m not a financial advisor, a certified financial planner, or a journalist. I’m a person who went through a divorce, rebuilt a 530 credit score, paid off $40,000 in debt, and is raising a special needs son — and I write about what I’ve learned in the process.

Where I reference financial products, legal structures, or government programs, I verify the information against official sources. But my perspective is always that of a consumer and a parent, not a professional advisor.

How I Recommend Products

When I recommend a financial product — a credit card, a personal loan, a savings account — it’s because I’ve either used it myself or researched it thoroughly enough to believe it’s a good option for people in situations similar to mine.

I will never recommend something solely because it pays a higher commission. If a product is bad for you, I won’t recommend it regardless of what it pays me. If I haven’t used a product personally, I’ll say so.

Affiliate Relationships

This site earns money through affiliate links. When you click a link to a financial product and sign up or get approved, I may earn a commission. This doesn’t cost you anything extra — the price is the same whether you use my link or go directly.

Affiliate income is how this site stays free. It’s also what allows me to spend time creating honest, detailed content instead of hiding everything behind a paywall.

How I Handle Accuracy

I make every effort to keep information accurate and up to date. Financial products change — interest rates move, fees get updated, eligibility requirements shift. When I become aware of outdated information, I update the content.

If you spot something that’s wrong or outdated, please let me know. I’d rather fix an error than leave bad information up.

What This Site Is Not

This site is not financial advice. It’s financial experience — what I did, what I learned, and what I’d tell a friend in a similar situation. Your circumstances are different from mine. Before making major financial decisions — especially around special needs trusts, guardianship, or benefit eligibility — consult with a qualified professional who knows your specific situation.

I’ll always tell you when something requires a professional. I’ll never pretend I’m one.
