OpenSky Plus Review

Our verdict: The OpenSky Plus is the no-annual-fee version of OpenSky’s no-credit-check secured card. For anyone who can fund the higher $300 minimum deposit, it is the better choice over the $35-a-year original, because the lower APR you give up should not matter on a card paid in full each month. Applicants who can only fund a $200 deposit should consider the original instead.

Plus vs. the original OpenSky: the real trade

Same bank, same no-credit-check application, same all-three-bureaus reporting. The differences, straight from the two disclosure documents:

OpenSky PlusOpenSky Secured
Annual fee$0$35
Purchase APR28.24% variable23.89% variable
Minimum deposit$300$200
Cash advance fee$10 or 3%$6 or 5%

The APR gap only costs money if you carry a balance. Carry $500 for a year and the 4.35-point difference is about $22, still less than the $35 fee. Carry nothing, which is the intended use, and Plus costs $35 less a year, every year. The original makes sense in one narrow case: you cannot fund $300, and $200 is what you have. The extra $100 of deposit is refundable; the annual fee is not.

What you’re actually buying

A no-credit-check application means a 480 score, a recent bankruptcy discharge, or an empty credit file does not change the outcome. OpenSky’s FAQ says approval is possible “whether you have poor credit or no credit,” and the application leaves no hard inquiry. The account reports monthly to all three bureaus, and OpenSky offers the same path as its sibling to the unsecured OpenSky Gold in as little as six months (that upgrade application does involve a hard check, per their FAQ).

Who should get this card

  • You want to avoid annual fees on a credit-building card

Who shouldn’t

OpenSky’s CFPB complaint record

Same finding as for OpenSky’s original card: searching the CFPB’s complaint database (August 25, 2026), we could not locate a company-level listing for issuer Capital Bank, N.A. — complaints mentioning OpenSky are mostly filed against the credit bureaus over reporting, and smaller banks’ complaints often route through other regulators. Treat that as an absence of findable data rather than proof of zero complaints. The recurring theme across every card we track is reporting disputes, so monitor your reports while you build; our free dispute letter templates cover that process.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between OpenSky Plus and OpenSky Secured?

Plus has no annual fee and a $300 minimum deposit at 28.24% APR; the original charges $35 a year, takes a $200 minimum deposit, and carries a lower 23.89% APR. Same bank, same no-credit-check application, same reporting to all three bureaus.

Is there really no credit check for OpenSky Plus?

OpenSky’s own card page and FAQ say there is no credit check to apply. The later upgrade to their unsecured Gold card does involve a hard inquiry.

Is the $300 deposit refundable?

Yes. The deposit secures your credit line and is refunded when the account is paid in full and closed, or when you graduate to an unsecured card.
