On October 7, 2026, people filed 2,778 complaints about reducing debt, out of 10,664 complaints in the FTC file for that day. That is 26.1%. The subject line they chose is “Reducing your debt (credit cards, mortgage, student loans).” The largest subject that day was Other, at 4,168 complaints. Debt relief was second, not most of the calls.
Over the same calendar window a year apart, the share barely moved. Complaints created from September 1 through October 1, 2025 included 64,711 debt-relief complaints out of 263,976 (24.5%). The same dates in 2026 included 67,202 out of 272,699 (24.6%). The debt-relief count rose 3.8%. All complaints in those files rose about 3.3%.
The state counts below are for debt-relief complaints created from September 1 through October 1, 2026. California had 8,679, Florida 6,480, and Texas 3,983. These are counts, not complaints per resident. A larger state will tend to rank higher. The state is the state the person who complained reported, not the state of the caller.
The FTC says none of the information about the reported calls is verified. A complaint is not a finding that the caller broke the law. Files are posted on weekdays, and weekend complaints are included in the next weekday file, so this page counts by the date the complaint was created, not by the file name. The files we used run from late August 2025 through the file posted October 8, 2026. They are not a complaint for every calendar day. 715 debt-relief complaints in the month window had a state name outside the 50 states and DC, or a blank state, and are not in the table.
