“Company Closed Your Account” Complaints to the CFPB

The CFPB received 5,596 complaints from October 2025 through September 2026 in which consumers said a bank or other company closed their checking, savings or other deposit account, up 23.5% from 4,531 the year before. These are unverified complaints, and the counts are not adjusted for how many customers each company has.

The figures come from the CFPB’s public Consumer Complaint Database, product "Checking or savings account," issue "Closing an account," sub-issue "Company closed your account." The consumer picks that category when filing. The database does not record why an account was closed, and this page makes no claim about the reasons.

What changed

The count has risen each year in the database’s last four 12-month periods, from 2,757 in October 2022 to September 2023 to 5,596 in the latest year. Complaints about checking and savings accounts overall also rose, from 48,190 to 88,889, so part of the increase reflects more people using the CFPB’s complaint system generally.

Complaints by company

The companies named most often were JPMORGAN CHASE & CO. (793), BANK OF AMERICA, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION (695), Chime Financial Inc (517), Block, Inc. (489) and WELLS FARGO & COMPANY (432). Larger companies have more customers and so tend to get more complaints of every kind. A higher count does not mean a company closes accounts more often relative to its size, and these counts cannot be used to rank companies on that basis.

What happened after the complaint

Companies respond to complaints the CFPB sends them. For the latest year’s complaints, 81.8% were closed with an explanation, 9.8% with monetary relief and 5.2% with non-monetary relief, as reported by the company.

Most of the complaints were about checking accounts (4,720), followed by other banking products (530) and savings accounts (312). 519 carried the CFPB’s servicemember tag, which also covers veterans and military families, and 290 the older American tag.

Why it matters

Losing a bank account can disrupt direct deposits, automatic bill payments and access to money, at least for a while. A closed account can also be reported to a checking-account screening company, which banks may check when you try to open a new account.

What you can do if a company closes your account

  • Ask the bank, in writing, to confirm the closure date and how and when you will receive any remaining balance. Read your deposit agreement for the bank’s notice terms.
  • Move direct deposits and automatic payments to another account quickly to avoid missed payments and returned-item fees.
  • Request your free report from ChexSystems and any other checking-account screening company the bank used. These companies are covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act, so you can dispute information you believe is wrong.
  • If you cannot open a regular account, ask banks and credit unions about lower-risk "second chance" or basic checking accounts.
  • If you believe the company handled the closure improperly, or you have not received your money, you can file a complaint with the CFPB or your bank’s regulator.

What these numbers are

The CFPB publishes complaints after the company responds or after 15 days, whichever comes first, and does not verify all the facts in them. One person can file more than one complaint. The category is the one the consumer chose. Complaint volume moves with awareness of the CFPB, with how companies and other agencies route people to it, and with outside events, so a change in the count is not by itself a change in how companies behave. The database is updated daily and earlier counts can change slightly.
