The CFPB received 88,345 complaints about checking and savings accounts from October 2025 through September 2026. 51,270 of them (58%) were about managing an account. The year before, the count was 78,783.
11,661 complaints were about an account being closed, including closures by the bank, and 7,180 about opening one. 4,913 were about a problem caused by low funds; within that, 2,761 were about overdrafts and overdraft fees. For how many adults pay overdraft fees, see the Fed survey figures.
California had the most complaints, 12,217, followed by Florida (8,957) and Texas (8,222). Per resident, the District of Columbia was highest at 57 per 100,000 people.
What these numbers are
These are complaints, not findings. The CFPB does not verify every claim, one person can file more than one complaint, and the issue is the category the consumer picked. Complaint counts also move with awareness of the CFPB and with how companies route customers to it, so a change in the count is not by itself a change in how companies behave.
