U.S. Household Debt by Type

Americans owed $18.77 trillion in household debt at the end of June 2026, according to the New York Fed. That was $13.5 billion less than the $18.78 trillion in the first quarter and $383 billion more than a year earlier.

Mortgages are most of it: $13.12 trillion, or 69.9% of the total. Mortgage balances fell $74 billion from the first quarter. Home equity lines rose $12.5 billion, auto loans $28 billion and credit cards $21 billion. Student loans fell $7 billion.

The New York Fed notes that the 2026 Q2 report revised the first-quarter credit card balance. The figures here are the revised ones. Changes between quarters are our subtraction.

What this counts

These are balances on consumer credit reports in the New York Fed Consumer Credit Panel, a sample drawn from Equifax files. "Other" is mostly retail cards and consumer finance loans. The figures are not adjusted for inflation or population, so a record total does not by itself mean more strain per household.
