Each row is one bank charter, not a holding company or card brand. A card issued under one brand can sit at a partner bank, and mergers can move balances between charters from one year to the next. The last column is first-half net charge-offs divided by June 30 balances, our rough calculation; it is not annualized and is not the official charge-off rate.
What this counts
Credit card loans and net charge-offs come from the quarterly Consolidated Reports of Condition and Income (call reports) that insured banks file. Net charge-offs are balances written off as uncollectible, minus recoveries, from January 1 through June 30. A charged-off balance can still be sold or sent to collections. Our charge-off page looks at the largest issuers in more detail.
