The CFPB received 39,338 complaints about money transfers, mobile and digital wallets, virtual currency and other money services from October 2025 through September 2026. 11,362 of them (29%) were filed under fraud or scam, the largest single issue.
Other common issues were "other transaction problem" (7,400), unauthorized transactions (6,838) and trouble getting money out of a mobile or digital wallet (4,039). The year before, October 2024 through September 2025, the count was 79,271, of which 51,899 were "other transaction problem". We do not know why that category was so much larger that year, so the drop in the total should not be read as a drop in problems.
California had the most complaints, 4,819, followed by Texas (3,664) and Florida (3,432). Per resident, the District of Columbia was highest at 20 per 100,000 people.
What these numbers are
These are complaints, not findings. The CFPB does not verify every claim, one person can file more than one complaint, and the issue is the category the consumer picked. Complaint counts also move with awareness of the CFPB and with how companies route customers to it, so a change in the count is not by itself a change in how companies behave.
