The CFPB received 33,194 mortgage complaints from October 2025 through September 2026. 16,148 of them (49%) were about trouble during the payment process, the issue that covers problems with a loan servicer after the loan is made. The year before, the count was 23,050.
9,278 complaints were filed under struggling to pay the mortgage, 3,264 under applying or refinancing and 2,609 under closing.
California had the most complaints, 4,032, followed by Florida (3,496) and Texas (3,245). Per resident, Georgia was highest at 17 per 100,000 people.
What these numbers are
These are complaints, not findings. The CFPB does not verify every claim, one person can file more than one complaint, and the issue is the category the consumer picked. Complaint counts also move with awareness of the CFPB and with how companies route customers to it, so a change in the count is not by itself a change in how companies behave.
