Perpay Credit Card Review

Our verdict: The Perpay Credit Card wires an unsecured card directly into your paycheck: approval requires routing part of your direct deposit to Perpay, and those deposits automatically pay the card. In exchange you get reporting to all three major bureaus with no hard credit pull and no security deposit, at a cost of roughly $108 a year in monthly fees and with rewards that spend only on Perpay’s own marketplace. It can suit a steadily employed rebuilder who cannot risk a credit check; anyone who can fund a deposit gets the same reporting for less with a secured card.

What the card costs

There is no annual fee line; the monthly fee is the cost. Perpay’s help-center terms page (dated January 2026) lists $9 per month from the first month, while the cardholder agreement shows a first-year monthly fee of $5.50 or $9.00 depending on your offer, then $9.00 thereafter. Budget for $66–$108 in the first year and about $108 every year after. A one-time $9 account opening fee is deducted from your first direct deposit and reduces your initial available credit.

The rest of the schedule: late fee up to $24, returned payment fee up to $24, a 3% foreign transaction fee, and an optional $35 charge if you want the metal version of the card. The purchase APR is 27.74%–29.99% variable, set at Prime + 20.99%–24.99%.

The rewards program needs its caveat stated plainly. The card pays 2% back on payments you make toward the balance, but rewards are redeemable only on the Perpay Marketplace, Perpay’s own shopping platform. They cannot be taken as cash or statement credit. Celtic Bank, the Utah bank behind this card, also issues the fee-based Indigo Mastercard; see our Indigo card review.

Your paycheck is the collateral

This is the section to read before applying, because the direct deposit is not a convenience feature. It is a condition of having the card at all.

Under the cardholder agreement, an Initial Transfer from your payroll must arrive at Perpay within 60 days of approval; if it does not, your approval is automatically revoked. After that, ongoing minimum direct deposits from each paycheck are required to keep the card active, and each deposit automatically pays down the balance. You do not choose when or how much to pay; the payment happens when your employer pays you.

The consequences follow directly. If you lose your job, the deposits stop and the card is at risk. If you change jobs, you must set up the payroll routing again with the new employer. The structure removes the possibility of a missed payment while the deposits flow, which is genuinely useful for building payment history, and it also means the card’s survival is tied to your employment rather than to your discipline.

Other restrictions from the agreement: the card is not available in New Hampshire, Vermont, or U.S. territories; there are no balance transfers and no cash advances; and disputes go to arbitration under a class-action waiver.

Who this card is for

  • You have steady employment with payroll direct deposit and expect that to continue
  • You cannot risk a hard inquiry: the application is a soft pull that Perpay says “will not affect your FICO or Vantage scores”
  • You want payments automated by construction, with on-time history reported to Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion
  • You already shop the Perpay Marketplace, since that is the only place rewards spend

Who should skip it

  • Anyone with variable, gig, or uncertain income: the card depends on regular payroll deposits, and losing them puts the account itself at risk
  • Anyone who can fund a deposit: the Capital One Platinum Secured review covers a $0-fee card, and the OpenSky Plus review covers a no-credit-check option; the tradeoff is explained in secured vs. unsecured
  • Anyone who wants rewards as cash rather than marketplace credit
  • Residents of New Hampshire, Vermont, or U.S. territories, where the card is not offered

Perpay’s CFPB complaint record

Perpay, Inc. drew 179 CFPB complaints in the 12 months ending September 9, 2026, led by “Incorrect information on your report” (70), followed by “Attempts to collect debt not owed” (20) and “Problem with a company's investigation into an existing problem” (15). When we first pulled this data (August 2026), the leading issue was credit reporting accuracy, a pattern worth noting for a card held primarily to build a credit report: check your own reports while you hold it, and use our free dispute letter templates if something reports wrong.

Methodology: raw counts from the CFPB Consumer Complaint Database; figures refresh automatically each week. Counts aren’t rates — the CFPB publishes no customer-base denominator, so totals aren’t comparable across companies of different sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Does applying for the Perpay Credit Card affect your credit score?

No. Perpay uses a soft inquiry and states the application “will not affect your FICO or Vantage scores.” It may contact Clarity, an alternative credit bureau. Once the card is open, payment history is reported to Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.

What happens to the Perpay card if you lose your job?

The card depends on payroll direct deposits. An initial transfer must arrive within 60 days of approval or the approval is automatically revoked, and ongoing minimum deposits from each paycheck are required to keep the card active. If your income stops, the card is at risk.

Can you redeem Perpay Credit Card rewards for cash?

No. The 2% back earned on payments toward the balance can be redeemed only on the Perpay Marketplace, Perpay’s own shopping platform, not as cash or statement credit.
