Bank Overdraft and NSF Fee Revenue by Bank

Banks with at least $1 billion in assets collected $2,954.4M in consumer overdraft and nonsufficient-funds (NSF) fees in the first half of 2026, up 7.2% from $2,756.6M in the first half of 2025. JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. reported the most, $562.0M, followed by Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. with $457.0M. The 10 banks with the most fee income took in 63.6% of the total.

Banks file these figures in their quarterly Call Reports. The overdraft line covers fees on consumer checking and savings accounts when the bank pays an item that overdraws the account or returns it unpaid, plus later charges on overdrawn accounts. It is reported net of refunds to customers. 508 banks filed the figure for June 30, 2026, and 67 of them reported zero.

What changed

Overdraft and NSF fee income rose by about $197.9M over the year. The set of reporting banks also changes from year to year because of mergers and because the $1 billion size test is applied each year. Counting only the 494 banks that reported in both years, the increase was 8.8%. Results vary widely by bank: Bank of America, N.A. reported $113.0M, compared with $72.0M a year earlier. The reports do not say why a bank’s fee income changed; it can move with fee schedules, policy changes, the number of accounts and how often customers overdraw.

The same banks reported $2,322.6M in monthly maintenance fees on consumer accounts and $771.8M in ATM fees charged to their own customers in the first half of 2026.

Why it matters

Overdraft and NSF fees are a cost that falls on the customers who run short, and repeated fees can add up quickly for people living close to the edge. Bank-by-bank figures show which institutions rely most on this income. A federal rule that would have capped overdraft fees at the largest banks was overturned by Congress in 2025 under the Congressional Review Act, so overdraft pricing is set by each bank’s own policies and by state law.

What you can do

  • Check whether overdraft coverage for debit card and ATM transactions is turned on. Under federal rules, a bank cannot charge an overdraft fee on those transactions unless you opted in, and you can opt out at any time.
  • Link a savings account or set up low-balance alerts so you see a shortfall before it turns into a fee.
  • Ask for a refund if you were charged a fee. Banks often refund fees on request, especially the first one.
  • Compare accounts. Many banks now offer accounts with no overdraft fees, small grace amounts or a short window to bring the balance back up.

What these numbers are

The figures come from Schedule RI, Memorandum item 15 of the FFIEC 031 and 041 Call Reports. Only banks with $1 billion or more in total assets that offer consumer deposit accounts must report this breakdown, so smaller banks and credit unions are not included. Figures are for each bank charter, not the holding company, and the bank's state is where its head office is, not where its customers live. Fees that work like interest on overdraft lines of credit are reported as loan income and are not included. A bank's figures may be amended after filing.
