Sorted by rate. The CSV has every county we could match to a Census population, 3,111 in all, including smaller counties where a few filings move the rate a lot. The rates and shares are our calculation.
What this counts, and what is missing
Table F-5A counts bankruptcy cases filed, by the county of the debtor’s address, split into business and nonbusiness cases. We use nonbusiness cases, which are mostly individuals and households. A joint case by a married couple counts once. Some rows in the table are marked as filings from outside the court’s district; we added them to the county they name. Connecticut is not in the table above: the court data use Connecticut’s old eight counties, while Census population now uses planning regions, so the two do not line up. Connecticut had 3,485 nonbusiness filings. In all, 3,610 filings (Connecticut, U.S. territories, a few retired Alaska areas and filings coded outside the U.S.) could not be matched to a population and have no rate.
A high rate can reflect local law, court practice and lawyers’ habits as much as financial stress. Our state page shows the same filings by state.
