Credit Union Auto Loans

Federally insured credit unions held $489.7 billion in vehicle loans on June 30, 2026: $162.2 billion in new vehicle loans and $327.5 billion in used. The middle new-vehicle loan rate they reported was 5.46%, and the middle used-vehicle rate 6.32%. 4,186 of the 4,299 credit unions in the file had vehicle loans.

$3.97 billion of the vehicle loans (0.81%) were reportable delinquent, generally two or more months late: 0.53% of new and 0.95% of used. From January through June the credit unions charged off $2.93 billion in vehicle loans ($2.36 billion of it used) and recovered $0.68 billion.

What the rates are

Credit unions report one interest rate each for new and used vehicle loans on the call report (account codes 523 and 524). NCUA’s instructions say to report the rate being offered as of the reporting period, and the most common rate if more than one applies. It is not an average of what borrowers pay and does not show the range of rates by credit score or loan term. We took the median across credit unions that reported a rate and held that type of loan. Weighted by each credit union’s balances, the reported rates average 5.54% for new and 6.41% for used. 21 credit unions reported a new-vehicle rate below 2% and 2 a used-vehicle rate above 18%; we left those values as reported.
