Servicemember and Veteran Complaints to the CFPB

The CFPB's public database lists 100,719 complaints from servicemembers, veterans and their families received from October 2025 through September 2026, compared with 102,071 in the previous 12 months. 60.7% were about credit reports, and 50,383 named one of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian or TransUnion. These are complaints as filed. The CFPB does not verify the facts in each one.

A complaint carries the "Servicemember" tag when the person filing it says the consumer is active duty, in the National Guard or Reserves, a veteran or retiree, or the spouse or dependent of a servicemember.

What changed

The total was about flat, down 1.3%, but the mix shifted. Credit reporting complaints fell from 64,860 to 61,161. Complaints about mortgages rose from 3,060 to 5,038, about credit cards from 5,128 to 6,840, and about vehicle loans or leases from 1,932 to 2,711. Complaints naming Navy Federal Credit Union fell from 4,357 to 2,131. The database does not explain why counts change; shifts can reflect company practices, how people learn about the CFPB, and changes in who files on someone's behalf.

By state, consumers in Florida filed the most (18,762), followed by Texas (13,358) and Georgia (8,524). We do not rank states here because the database has no count of servicemembers and veterans by state to compare against; the CSV has every state's total.

Counts are complaints, not people; one person can file more than one complaint. Changes and shares are our calculations. Company names are as listed in the database, shortened.

Why it matters

Credit problems can carry extra weight for people in uniform: security clearances can take finances into account, and frequent moves make it harder to keep track of bills and accounts. Military families also have specific legal protections that many lenders and collectors must follow.

What you can do

  • Active-duty servicemembers can place a free active-duty alert on their credit reports, and anyone can freeze their credit for free at each of the three bureaus.
  • The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act caps interest at 6% on debts taken out before active duty, if you ask in writing with a copy of your orders, and gives other protections around leases, foreclosures and court cases.
  • The Military Lending Act caps the cost of most consumer credit to active-duty members and their dependents at a 36% military APR.
  • Free help is available from your installation's legal assistance office and personal financial counselors.
  • If a company does not fix a problem, you can file a complaint at consumerfinance.gov/complaint. The CFPB sends it to the company for a response.

What these numbers are

These are complaints, not findings. The CFPB does not verify every claim, the product and issue are the categories the consumer chose, and the tag depends on what the person filing reports. The public database does not include every complaint the CFPB receives; for example, complaints are published only after the company responds or after 15 days, and some are excluded. Counts here will therefore not match the CFPB's own annual reports. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many customers a company has.
