Federally insured credit unions held $87.65 billion in credit card loans on June 30, 2026. The middle credit union card rate they reported was 11.50%. 2,825 of the 4,299 credit unions in the file had card loans.
$1.67 billion of the card loans (1.91%) were two or more months delinquent. From January through June the credit unions charged off $2.55 billion in card loans and recovered $0.30 billion. Weighted by each credit union’s card balances, the reported rate averages 15.34%, higher than the median because some of the largest card lenders report higher rates.
What the rate is
Credit unions report one interest rate for their card loans on the call report (account code 521). NCUA’s instructions say to report the rate being offered as of the reporting period, and the most common rate if more than one applies. It is not an average of what cardholders pay, and it does not reflect penalty rates or a card’s range of rates by credit score. We took the median across the 2,821 credit unions that reported a rate. Federal credit unions are generally limited to an 18% APR; 20 credit unions, 5 of them federal charters, reported a rate above 18%, and 13 reported one below 5%. We left those values as reported; they may be reporting errors or special programs, and they barely move the median.
