Over the four quarters ending June 2026, 4.83% of auto loan balances held by borrowers aged 18 to 29 moved into serious delinquency (90 or more days late), according to the New York Fed. That was more than twice the rate for borrowers aged 60 to 69 (1.77%). For all ages it was 3.00%.
The rate falls with age through the 60s: 3.91% for 30 to 39, 2.79% for 40 to 49 and 2.19% for 50 to 59, then rises to 2.45% for borrowers 70 and older. A year earlier the 18-to-29 rate was 4.90%. The highest 18-to-29 rate in the series was 5.62%, in Q2 2009.

What this counts
The New York Fed measures the share of auto loan balances that were current or less than 90 days late and became 90 or more days late, as a four-quarter moving sum. It is a flow of newly delinquent balances, not the share of balances that are delinquent at one time, so it differs from the figures on our 90+ days late by loan type page. Age is the current year minus the borrower’s birth year, and the groups are redefined each year, so a group is not the same people over time. The data come from the New York Fed Consumer Credit Panel, built from Equifax credit files.
The New York Fed describes auto loans as "loans taken out to purchase a car, including leases, provided by automobile dealers and automobile financing companies."
