Banks With the Most Auto Loans

FDIC-insured banks held $551.9B in auto loans on June 30, 2026, up 5.6% from $522.5B a year earlier. CAPITAL ONE, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION held the most, $89.3B, followed by ALLY BANK with $79.8B. The 10 largest bank auto lenders held 78.1% of all bank auto loans.

Across all banks, 2.12% of auto loan balances were 30 to 89 days past due at the end of June, down from 2.24% a year earlier. Banks charged off a net $2.54 billion in auto loans in the first half of 2026, compared with $2.49 billion in the first half of 2025. On an annualized basis that is about 0.92% of balances.

What changed

Bank auto lending grew modestly over the year while early-stage delinquency edged down and charge-offs were roughly flat in dollars. Nonaccrual loans, where the bank has stopped booking interest because it doubts full repayment, were 0.64% of balances, compared with 0.61% a year earlier. Results vary a lot by lender, depending partly on the mix of borrowers each bank lends to and the rates it charges.

Auto loans are loans to individuals for passenger cars and other vehicles for personal use, as reported in Call Reports; leases are not included. Shares, changes and rates are our calculations. Net charge-offs are year-to-date through June 30; the annualized rate doubles them and divides by June 30 balances, a simple approximation. The CSV lists every bank that reported auto loans.

Why it matters

Banks are only part of the auto loan market. Credit unions, the finance companies owned by carmakers and independent finance companies also make many car loans, so these figures are not the whole market. But banks report their figures lender by lender each quarter, which makes it possible to see who the large bank lenders are and how their loans are performing.

What you can do when shopping for a car loan

  • Get a preapproval from a bank or credit union before you visit a dealer, so you can compare it with dealer-arranged financing.
  • Compare the APR and the total cost over the life of the loan, not just the monthly payment. A longer term lowers the payment but usually costs more in interest.
  • If you are falling behind, contact the lender before you miss a payment. Many lenders offer payment deferrals or due-date changes, and repossession rules vary by state.
  • For new vehicles assembled in the United States, bought for personal use with a loan taken out after 2024, some borrowers can deduct part of the loan interest on their 2025 to 2028 federal taxes, subject to income limits. See our page on new-car loan terms.

What these numbers are

The figures are from quarterly Call Reports filed by FDIC-insured banks and savings institutions and published through the FDIC’s BankFind Suite. They are reported by each bank, not by holding company, so a banking group with several bank charters appears as separate banks. Loans that banks have sold or securitized off their balance sheets are not included. Credit unions file with the NCUA and are not included here; see our page on credit union auto loans.
