0.9% of U.S. mortgages were 90 or more days past due in December 2025, up from 0.7% a year earlier, according to the CFPB’s Mortgage Performance Trends data. Louisiana had the highest share, 2.1%, followed by Mississippi at 1.8%.
Over the year the share rose in 41 of the 50 states and D.C. and fell in 4. Florida’s share doubled, from 0.6% to 1.2%. California and Wisconsin were lowest at 0.5%. Among metro areas, Laredo, TX was highest at 2.5%. Another 2.1% of U.S. mortgages were 30 to 89 days past due, an early stage of delinquency.
The national rate is still far below its peak of 4.9% in January 2010.

County figures for 507 counties with enough sample loans: county CSV.
What these numbers are
The data come from the National Mortgage Database, a 5% sample of outstanding closed-end, first-lien mortgages on 1–4 family homes, drawn from the files of one of the three national credit bureaus. The 90-day rate counts loans 90 or more days past due but not in foreclosure, as a share of all outstanding mortgages; loans already in foreclosure are not included. Figures are rounded to 0.1 point in the source files, so small changes may be rounding. The CFPB notes that rates looked unusually low in 2020–21 because loans in pandemic forbearance were often reported as current. Past figures can be revised when the credit data are updated. Areas with too few sample loans are not shown. Data for 2026 had not been posted as of October 17, 2026.
